What is Wordle?
Wordle is a web-based game that you can play in any internet browser, such as: Chrome or Safari . The game only lives online and you can find it on its official website here . There have been numerous clones of Wordle since it became hugely popular, but the site linked above is the only official source.
At its core, Wordle is a guessing game. Specifically, you have to guess the word of the day. Each word is five letters long and you only have six attempts to guess the correct word. The word of the day is the same for everyone.
What do the colored tiles in Wordle mean?
While five-letter words may seem easy to guess, the challenge comes from the fact that you only have six chances to guess them. You do this by trying letter by letter. When you enter a letter, you will notice that the box changes to one of three colors:
This means that you have guessed the correct letter and it is in the correct place in the word. For example, if you guessed “M” and placed it in the third (middle box) and the word is “comic”, the M box will turn green.
This means you have guessed the correct letter, but the letter is not in the correct place. For example, if you guessed the letter “I” but placed it in the first box, the box with “I” in it will turn yellow, indicating that the word contains that letter but is in the wrong place (in “strip” the “I ” should be in the fourth box).
This means that the guessed letter does not appear in the word at all. For example – in our “strip” example – if you guessed the letter “T”, the box you placed it in would turn gray because the letter “T” does not appear anywhere in the word “strip”.
Wordle Hidden Modes
Many people don’t know this, but Wordle actually has a few hidden modes. These can be found in the Settings of the web-based app.
Enabling this means that you must use the hints in the colored box on the next guess.
This will enable Wordle’s dark mode.
Colorblind mode: This is an accessibility feature for people who are colorblind. It makes everything contrasting so that it is easier to see.
