We distinguish two different types of fatigue:
People often feel physically exhausted with physical fatigue .
Mental (mental) fatigue
Mental fatigue often causes problems with concentration, memory and motivation to do things. It can also cause mood disorders, such as anxiety, sadness and irritation.
Fatigue can have a big impact on daily life and how you want to live your life. It can make sure that you no longer have the energy for anything. Even the smallest task can be difficult.
Causes of fatigue
Below are several causes that (together) can cause fatigue:
Pain. Especially when it is long lasting.
Decreased muscle condition. For example, due to inactivity, old age or inflammation.
Decreased heart lung condition. As a result, there is more shortness of breath and the muscles do not get enough oxygen.
Excessive effort. For example, exercise that is too long and/or too heavy.
Disturbed sleep pattern. For example because of pain, going to bed too late or napping during the day.
Stress and anxiety.
Gloom, depression or burnout.
eating habits. For example, due to unhealthy diet or insufficient nutrition.
overweight
medication. Some medicines can cause drowsiness or loss of concentration.
Active inflammation. Inflammatory substances can cause fatigue and a flu feeling.
anemia.
Diseases that disrupt the metabolism, such as diabetes and thyroid disorders.
Advice
You can do a lot yourself to reduce fatigue. Depending on the cause of the fatigue, the following advice can help to reduce the daily impact of fatigue:
Talk about fatigue with family, friends and colleagues
Due to the limitations it gives, fatigue can cause a lot of frustration and anger. A lot of people don’t talk about it because they think others don’t understand anyway. By talking about fatigue with people around you, they understand better what you are feeling. They understand better why you sometimes can’t do something or why tasks take longer.
Energy distribution
Often tired people spend their energies on work and obligations and drop fun things. Use the 4 P’s to conserve your energy and find out what’s important to you.
