Cutting Corners

Have you noticed that a lot of places have their serving sizes shrunk?

The McFlurry now comes in a much smaller cup, and Old Town has cups that look normal size but a lot of the bottom is clear plastic. And on an unrelated note, Starbuck’s coffee jelly now taste horrible because they downgraded to a softer, presumably cheaper jelly.

In fact I just came back from a mamak with glasses smaller than my hand. Seriously, join your middle finger with your thumb - THAT’S the diameter of the cup! If you must know, it’s Ravi’s at 3 Two Square, Section 14. Sucks ass.

Do they really think we wouldn’t notice?

Is reducing the quantity an equal solution to raising the price? No. Because they’re simply not proportionate.

If they raised the price they might add 50 cents (approx 25% raise), but cutting the serving means you either live with it or spend 100% more on another cup. And I must say the serving cut is AT LEAST 30% or more.

I’m growing increasingly disgruntled with Old Town as they’re the biggest culprit -serving miniscule cups of tea for RM3++. Also, they’re slowly losing their touch by diversifying into a bunch of low quality offerings at unjustified prices.

The truth is, people are willing to pay for quality. Once you start cutting corners, you only hurt your reputation. A better alternative would be to offer a large size for people who are willing to pay.

Consumers can see through your intentions. It is insulting and will not be tolerated.
